Abstract
Monte Carlo simulations of ultrathin magnetic films show that these sy stems exhibit three distinct phases. Intermediate between the striped phase at low temperatures and the fully disordered phase at high tempe ratures is a phase with no long range order. In this intermediate phas e, irregular but well-defined magnetic domains exist. These show a str iking resemblance to the domains observed in experimental studies.
