Based cell carcinoma is an increasingly common diagnosis in dermatolog
y clinics. Traditional treatment by surgical excision, curettage and c
autery, cryotherapy or radiotherapy is unsurpassed, in terms of conven
ience and effectiveness, by newly reported modalities such as intrales
ional interferon and photodynamic therapy. Most uncomplicated basal ce
ll carcinomas are best managed by surgical excision after initial cure
ttage to delineate the extent of the tumour. The treatment of basal ce
ll carcinoma, the management of treatment failure, and the advantages
and disadvantages of each technique are reviewed.
