The North Shore University Hospital Cyclotron/PET Facility houses a Sc
anditronix MC17F cyclotron and a SuperPETT 3000 camera. The cyclotron
produces extracted beams of 17.5 MeV protons or 8.5 MeV deuterons up t
o 80 mu A. It is equipped with a 6.5 M beam line with a three port swi
tching magnet (+30 degrees, 0 degrees, 30 degrees). The 0 degrees port
supports target chambers for the production of C-11, N-13, O-15, and
F-18. F-18 is produced by both the O-18(p, n)F-18 and the Ne-20(d, alp
ha) F-18 reactions, for fluoride ion and anhydrous F-2, respectively.
Remotely operated semiautomatic processing systems are used for the pr
oduction of C-11-labeling agents and permanent gases labeled with O-15
. The two experimental beams lines (+ 30 degrees, - 30 degrees) are us
ed for target development, notably the production of Co-55 by bombardm
ent of a highly enriched Fe-54 target with deuterons.
