Copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone with 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)methyl and
2-(N,N-diethylamino)ethyl methacrylates and their quaternary ammonium
salts, obtained by reacting the amines with RX, where R=CnH2n+1 (n = 2
- 10), X = Cl, I, were synthesized using radiation-induced polymeriza
tion and polymeranalogous reactions. Molecular and conformational char
acteristics of the synthesized copolymers were studied using light sca
ttering and viscometry. As the length of an alkyl radical is increased
to n = 6, the intramolecular interactions are disbalanced and electro
static repulsion is suppressed, which results in the contraction of ma
cromolecular coil. As a result, second virial coefficient, intrinsic v
iscosity, and macromolecular dimensions decrease. At n > 6, steric int
eractions between the side groups give rise to a slight increase in in
trinsic viscosity and macromolecular dimensions, whereas the second vi
rial coefficient continues to decrease.
