Abstract
The effects of molecular mass on the character of thermal transformati ons in PAN have been studied by IR spectroscopy and differential therm al analysis. Cyclization involving nitrile groups becomes possible upo n thermal unwinding of the hydrocarbon helix and is favored by fragmen tation of the polymer chain. The unwinding temperature, the macrochain fragmentation temperature, and the cyclization rate depend on the mol ecular mass of the polymer.
