Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA), an
d their copolymer, obtained by radical graft polymerization of glycidy
l methacrylate onto PVA fibers have been studied by IR spectroscopy. T
he spectrum of the graft copolymer was also obtained by mathematical m
odeling. The spectral regions sensitive to the sites of localization o
f the kinetic chains of grafted PGMA, are found within 3600 - 3100, 14
50 - 1300, 1120 - 1000, and 700 - 500 cm(-1), which correspond to the
stretching and bending OH vibrations, stretching C-O vibrations, and t
orsional; bending vibrations of the hydroxyl groups, respectively. It
is established that grafted PGMA molecules are linked to PVA macromole
cules via oxygen atoms of hydroxyl groups.
