Pore-size distributions determined experimentally and durability facto
rs (DFs) assigned on the basis of the observed state of weathering of
certain Sphinx strata were used as a pattern of input and output, resp
ectively, to train artificial neural networks. The weights obtained we
re then used to calculate the DF of the remaining Sphinx strata. The c
alculated values excellently matched the observed relative condition o
f these strata as well as the durability indicated by their lithologic
al and petrofabric makeup.
