Abstract
Several kinesin-like motor proteins have recently been found associate d with chromosome arms. They seem to be involved in the so-called 'pol ar ejection forces' that contribute to the congression of chromosomes on the metaphase plate, and at least one of them is essential for the maintenance of spindle bipolarity. The discovery of these molecules ch anges our view of the mechanism of spindle assembly and chromosome mov ement.
