D. Harrington et al., MATERNAL SUBSTANCE USE AND NEGLECTFUL PARENTING - RELATIONS WITH CHILDRENS DEVELOPMENT, Journal of clinical child psychology, 24(3), 1995, pp. 258-263
Examined the relations among maternal substance use, neglectful parent
ing, and early childhood development among 51 women with a history of
substance use and a comparison group of 67 women. Maternal substance u
se was not related to neglectful parenting or children's cognitive, mo
tor, or language development. Neglectful parenting was not related to
children's cognitive, motor, or expressive language development; howev
er, younger children and those from safer, cleaner, more organized hom
es had better receptive language.
