Jj. Bauermeister et al., DIMENSIONS OF ATTENTION-DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER - FINDINGS FROM TEACHER AND PARENT REPORTS IN A COMMUNITY SAMPLE, Journal of clinical child psychology, 24(3), 1995, pp. 264-271
Used probability community samples of 9- to 17-year-old Puerto Rican c
hildren to replicate previous findings of bidimensional covariation of
teacher and parent reports of attention deficit hyperactivity disorde
r (ADHD) symptoms generally used on clinical or otherwise selected sam
ples. Parents and teachers responses to ADHD questions from a Spanish
version of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children were factor
analyzed. Both analyses lend support to a bidimensional conceptualizat
ion of ADHD consisting of two factors, Inattention and Hyperactivity-I
mpulsivity, that are virtually identical for independent ratings of pa
rents and teachers in terms of the item loadings. The data are consist
ent with the conceptualization of ADHD, as noted in the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric
Association, 1994), and its cross-cultural applicability.
