Jp. Burke et al., A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF TWICE-DAILY CEFOTAXIME COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL THERAPY FOR THE TREATMENT OF INFECTIONS IN A USA HOSPITAL, Diagnostic microbiology and infectious disease, 22(1-2), 1995, pp. 167-169
A retrospective, matched cohort study was performed to determine the c
ost outcomes among 495 hospitalized patients who received twice-daily
dosing of cefotaxime and 3949 matched cohorts who received other antib
iotics. By an attribution model, twice-daily use was associated with s
horter mean lengths of stay (-0.498 day, P <.7) and lower mean total c
osts of hospitalization (-$623, P <.8). Twice-daily dosing of cefotaxi
me is commonly employed for the treatment of a variety of serious infe
ctions, and appears to be cost effective.
