Tapping of HVDC lines to serve intermediate loads or to pick up disper
sed generation has always pesented formidable technical and economic c
hallenges to transmission planners and to system designers. These chal
lenges have been particularly daunting when the power rating of the ta
p is small compared to that of the main terminals. This document provi
des transmission planners with various factors which need to be consid
ered in evaluating the feasibility of tapping existing HVDC transmissi
on lines or in developing alternatives for potential new transmission
schemes.
