The effects of self-accommodation and plastic accommodation in martens
itic transformations and the displacement vector for lattice deformati
on are discussed. The authors propose that the formation of an invaria
nt habit plane is connected with the self-accomodation between differe
nt martensitic variants and results in the formation of internal twinn
ed martensites; the plastic accommodation, rather than self-accommodat
ion, occurs between parent and new phases when the strength is low or
the dislocation density is high for the parent phase and the invariant
habit plane is difficult to form, resulting in the formation of dislo
cation martensites.
