The chasm between behavioral and nonbehavioral views of clinical pheno
mena results in communication difficulties in both directions. We dist
inguish five situations based on the nature and degree of differences
in understanding within the two language systems. We recommend differe
nt communication strategies for behavioral scientists, depending upon
which situation best applies.
