Abstract
An exact analytical solution of the nonlinear MHD equations for pertur bations travelling across the external magnetic field in a magnetized plasma is presented. Our solution describes the development of the env elope of an initially smooth large amplitude solitary wave. A rapid st eepening of the velocity and magnetic field perturbations is shown to occur.
