The effects of flame annealing on the surface structure of polycrystal
line gold and platinum electrodes were investigated by scanning tunnel
ing microscopy. For gold a pronounced facetting in the (100) direction
was observed. The roughness of the platinum sample was significantly
reduced by the annealing procedure. On an electrochemically roughened
Pt(111) electrode atomic scale resolution was achieved on a surface wi
th near-atomic scale roughness.
