Professor R.M. Latanision was the 1994 recipient of the Willis Rodney
Whitney Award sponsored by NACE International. The present work is tak
en from his award lecture at CORROSION/94 held in March 1994 in Baltim
ore, MD. Latanision discussed the interplay between corrosion science
and corrosion engineering in advancing technology. His lecture focused
on supercritical water oxidation and other technologies that have bee
n under study in the H.H Uhlig Corrosion Laboratory and in which the c
hemical properties of new materials and traditional materials have pro
ven integral to the development of contemporary or advanced engineerin
g systems.
