A regular microhardness technique was applied to measure the vessel mi
crohardness through a circular hole, 4.5 m long and 20 cm in diameter
in the biological vessel shield. An increase of 57% in the microhardne
ss and the ultimate tensile strength of the vessel were detected. Base
d on irradiation effects on similar materials we conclude that Si prec
ipitation is responsible for the changes in the vessel mechanical prop
erties.
