Jf. Carroll et al., FACTOR-ANALYSIS OF THE EIWN-R (WECHSLER I NTELLIGENCE SCALE FOR CHILDREN REVISED) PUERTO-RICO, WITH CHILDREN OF 11 AGE LEVELS, FROM 6 TO 16YEARS OLD, Revista latinoamericana de psicología, 27(2), 1995, pp. 187-206
In 1975, Alan Kaufman reported his findings on the factor analyses of
the WISC-R using the standarization data of the scale. Kaufman identif
ied three significant factors, i.e., Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual
Organization, and Freedom from Distractibility to explain the 1975 WIS
C-R data. He also demonstrated the stability of the factors through di
fferent factor-analytical procedures across the age range of 6 1/2 to
16 1/2. Semi replication of Kaufman's factor-analytic study of the WIS
C-R (1975) was done with the standardization data of the EIWN-R de Pue
rto Rico. The authors partially replicated Kaufman's methodology and a
sked the same questions he addressed, to determine if an emergent fact
or in the EIWN-R de Puerto Rico data was meaningful. A semi replicatio
n of Kaufman's factor analyses of the WISC-R (1975) was done with the
Puerto Rican WISC-R (or EIWN-R de Puerto Rico). The Puerto Rican WISC-
R was factor analyzed at ages 6 to 16-11 (N = 200 per age group). The
factor structure was remarkably consistent across the age range, with
three factors emerging for each group: Verbal Comprehension, Perceptua
l Organization and Freedom from Distractibility. These factors are ide
ntical to those identified by Kaufman (1975) for the WISC-R. The stabi
lity of the factor structure was established across the age range and
it also tends to confirm Wechsler's Verbal-Performance dichotomy. The
results of the study are discussed in terms of their clinical applicat
ions, particularly of the ETWN-R de Puerto Rico profiles.
