Abstract
This study investigates the impact of international trade on the 'in-h ouse' transaction sector of US manufacturing industries over the perio d 1985-89. Higher import (export) intensity is found to have a strongl y (weakly) negative effect on the relative size of the sector. The nee d for organizational restructuring seems especially urgent for 'high-t ech' industries, which tend to have relatively large private bureaucra cies.
