Abstract
This commentary begins by reviewing the ''hamburger model'' of medical education Boelen proposed and noting the appropriateness of its symbo lism in various regards. It then discusses the concept of social accou ntability. Finally, it elaborates on th taxonomy Boelen proposed for a ssessing the social accountability of medical schools; in particular i t suggests considering input measures (for example, the school's missi on statement and its investment of resources), process measures (for e xample, educational innovations), and outcome measures.
