Abstract
Gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy was used to investig ate the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEDS) in unc atalysed reaction mixtures. The influence of different solvents ( meth anol, ethanol and 1:1 ethanol-methanol mixture) was studied for the sy stem : TEOS:H2O:solvent in 1:1:3.5(1.75) molar ratio. The presence of various solvents determines some differences in the composition of mol ecular species formed and reveals differences in the mechanism of reac tion.
