The construction and validation of the Marital Intimacy Questionnaire
(MIQ), a theory-based self-report questionnaire assessing 5 components
of marital intimacy, is described. Factor scales were produced using
data from 93 couples and confirmed in a new sample of 102 couples. Int
ernal consistency analysis indicated sufficient degrees of reliability
and moderate interscale correlations. Construct validity was establis
hed by examining the correlations of the MIQ with measures of marital
satisfaction, perceived global intimacy, and communication intimacy, a
nd discriminant validity by showing its ability to discriminate betwee
n maritally distressed and nondistressed couples.
