M. Wilk et al., CUTANEOUS ANGIOMYXOMA - A BENIGN NEOPLASM DISTINCT FROM CUTANEOUS FOCAL MUCINOSIS, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 33(2), 1995, pp. 352-355
We describe a cutaneous angiomyxoma on the head of a 38-year-old man w
ithout evidence of Carney's complex. Complete excision of the tumor ap
peared to be curative. Histologic examination revealed fibroblast-like
cells embedded in a well-demarcated, lobulate, mucinous, and vascular
ized stroma with a delicate reticulin network. Immunohistologically, t
he stromal cells were consistently positive for vimentin and focally p
ositive for smooth muscle A-actin but were negative for desmin, KP1, M
AC387, factor XIIIa, CD34, Leu-7, and S-100. Cutaneous angiomyxoma app
ears to represent a myofibroblastic neoplasm that should be distinguis
hed from cutaneous focal mucinosis.
