There is a wealth of evidence in favour of the existence of bronchial
remodelling in asthma. This repair process involves structural and inf
lammatory cells as well as extracellular matrix. All these structures
are present and activated in the bronchi of asthmatic patients. These
phenomena may have clinical consequences, but they have not been direc
tly demonstrated. The action of antiasthmatic treatments, especially c
orticosteroids, requires further evaluation by long-term prospectives
studies.
