Early and appropriate therapy for tendon lacerations can result in a s
ound, athletic horse in more than 50% of cases. Extensor tendon lacera
tions have a better prognosis and wound care, immobilization, and prot
ection from flexor dominance are the goals of therapy. Flexor tendon l
acerations are more serious because of the loss of support to the limb
. Therapy goals include wound care, tendon suturing, and strict immobi
lization for approximately 6 weeks. This article describes management
of horses with tendon lacerations and the outcomes in detail.
