A simple and reliable two-step micropropagation system was developed f
or mature Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila L.). Shoot-tip cultures were init
iated and multiplied on a modified Murashige and Skoog medium suppleme
nted with 1 mu M benzyladenine, B5 vitamins, solidified with 0.22% Gel
rite, and subcultured weekly. Proliferated shoots 2-3 cm in length roo
ted successfully in sterile and non-sterile soil mix at 100% efficienc
y. Healthy plants were acclimatized to the ambient environment.
