Ferredoxin (flavodoxin) NADP(+) oxidoreductase participates in methion
ine biosynthesis and in the function of two anaerobic enzymes, pyruvat
e formate-lyase and ribonucleotide reductase. We prepared insertion mu
tants of Escherichia coli lacking a functional enzyme. They do not req
uire methionine and they grow well anaerobically, but they show increa
sed sensitivity to paraquat.
