Abstract
The shock response of explosive monocrystals is strongly anisotropic. Shock initiation sensitivity depends strongly on crystal orientation i n PETN. This can be understood in terms of steric hindrance to shear d uring the shock-induced deformation of the molecular crystal. This ini tiation mechanism appears to be tribochemical rather than thermal. Rel ated work by other researchers is also discussed.
