Nitriding of Fe-12.5Al (wt%) alloy in a pulsed plasma was carried out
at 550 degrees C. The hardness of the ion nitrided layer reached up to
1018 HV 0.1 after a treatment of 24 h. The thickness of the layer was
up to 60 mu m and near the corners of the specimen up to 200 mu m. Th
e microstructure of the base material contained homogeneously distribu
ted needle-like precipitates of a second phase but no precipitates wer
e observed in the nitrided layer.
