The activity of aryl-alcohol oxidase was detected in the mycelial extr
acts of a lignin-degrading basidiomycete, Phanerochaete chrysosporium.
The induction of production of the enzyme by aryl-alcohols was sugges
ted. The enzyme,vas purified to homogeneity. The molecular weight was
estimated to be about 78,000. The prosthetic group was found to be FAD
. Several aryl alcohols can serve as substrates but aliphatic alcohols
are inert.
