Mas. Chapman et al., ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF BOWEL-CLEANSING AGENTS - IMPLICATIONS OF ANTIBACTEROIDES ACTIVITY OF SENNA, British Journal of Surgery, 82(8), 1995, pp. 1053-1053
Bowel-cleansing agents may affect the survival and growth of colonic b
acteria and so may alter the relationship between colonic epithelium a
nd gut flora. This study examined the in vitro antimicrobial effects o
f senna, magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), polyethylene glycol (PEG) 600 and
Picolax (sodium picosulphate 10 mg, magnesium oxide 3.5 mg and citric
acid 12 g) (Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Feltham, UK) against 36 strains
of colonic bacteria belonging to four species.
