Coefficients of mass transfer relative to the liquid phase, k(L), were
determined for the absorption of O-2 in water and aqueous sugar solut
ions of various concentrations with and without sodium lauryl sulphate
. The contact system was a cylinder packed with balls and rods of know
n gas-liquid interface area. The measured values of k(L) were compared
with those previously obtained for absorption of CO2 and SO2 under th
e same conditions. This study of the absorption of three gases of wide
ly differing solubilities shows that k(L) depends on the flow rate, vi
scosity, surface tension and hydrodynamics of the liquid phase more th
an on the nature of gas absorbed. The whole data set for all three gas
es and all operating conditions is adequately fitted by que equation S
