Ethoxylated alkyl phenol oligomer partitioning between the microemulsi
on-water-oil (heptane) phases of a Winsor III system is determined by
high performance liquid chromatography for systems containing octyl, n
onyl, decyl, dodecyl and dinonyl phenol species. The partition coeffic
ient between the water and oil phases obeys a simple law depending upo
n the alkyl chain length and the number of ethylene oxide groups per o
ligomer molecule. The results allow estimation of the energy of transf
er of an ethylene oxide group and of a methylene group from oil to wat
er.
