A denuder-based method for sampling and separating gaseous and particu
late mercury in the air is described. Two different denuder configurat
ions developed in Vilnius, Lithuania (silver) and in Gothenburg, Swede
n (gold) are compared. Data were acquired at different sampling locati
ons around the cities of Vilnius and Gothenburg. The concentration of
particulate Hg was found to be 0.04 to 0.40 ng m(-3) in the Vilnius re
gion, and 0.11 to 0.57 ng m(-3) in the Gothenburg region. Intercalibra
tion results for the silver and gold denuders are presented. The resul
ts obtained by the two different denuder configurations and sampling s
et-ups display satisfactory agreement.
