The principle of a novel ELISA (nylon-slip immune-test, NSIT) was appl
ied to the differential detection of two analogous enterotoxins, chole
ra toxin (CT) of Vibrio cholerae and heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) of e
nterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. The results obtained for CT and LT de
tection by a single test were sufficiently sensitive (87.9 and 100%) a
nd specific (100 and 94.7%) in the differential detection test, when c
ompared with the result of a colony hybridization test with DNA probes
. The results suggest that the novel ELISA is applicable to the diagno
sis of bacterial infections, by means of differential immunological de
tection of toxins in a single test.
