Speeds of sound are measured in binary mixtures of alkyl cellosolve (2
-ethoxyethanol and 2-butoxyethanol) with aliphatic alcohols at 308.15K
. Aliphatic alcohols includes methanol, propan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, 2 met
hyl propan-1-ol, 2-methyl propan-2-ol and pentan-1-ol. Experimental so
und speed data are used along with the density values to compute isent
ropic compressibilities in these mixtures. Deviations in isentropic co
mpressibilities are negative in all the systems except in mixtures con
taining pentan-1-ol as non-common component, where as an inversion in
sign of the function is observed. Further, speeds of sound are evaluat
ed on the basis of Jacobson's free length theory and Schaff's collisio
n factor theroy. The predicted values are in good agreement with the e
xperimental results.
