N. Cumberlidge, REDESCRIPTION OF THE AFRICAN FRESH-WATER CRAB SUDANONAUTES-AFRICANUS (EDWARDS,A.MILNE, 1869) (BRACHYURA, POTAMOIDEA, POTAMONAUTIDAE), Journal of crustacean biology, 15(3), 1995, pp. 588-598
The African fresh-water crab Sudanonautes africanus (A. Milne Edwards,
1869) is redescribed from a large series of specimens from 5 countrie
s. The species is redefined by a combination of characters of the cara
pace, chelipeds, and gonopod 1. The distribution of S. africanus is re
vised to include the coastal rain-forest regions of Nigeria and Centra
l Africa (from south Cameroon to lower Zaire), and to exclude the West
African region west of the river Niger in Nigeria. Sudanonautes afric
anus is one of the second intermediate hosts of the human lung fluke (
Paragonimus).
