By using rigorous coupled-wave diffraction theory along with a time-de
pendent nonlinear formulation, we analyze two- and multiple-wave coupl
ing and the grating kinetics in BaTiO3 with different boundary interfa
ces. Efffects of electrostatic and optical anisotropy have been includ
ed in the analysis. Significant mode conversion to higher orders is ob
served only when the boundary interfaces are highly mismatched.
