The samples of soils from the steelworks ''Sendzimir'' safety zone and
nearby town centres as well as from some more distant places were ana
lyzed for trace metals by EDXRF and INAA. Concentrations of Cr, Mn, Ni
, Co, Zn, As, Sb, Cd (by AAS), Pb, Th and U were determined. For Se an
d Hg no values exceeding the lower determination limits for INAA (3 mu
g g(-1) and 1 mu g g(-1) respectively) were observed. Generally, conc
entrations of the biologically important metals were not drastically h
igher than the typical or tolerable values for soils. For some metals
(Zn and Cd) their concentrations were quite frequently higher than nat
ural. Only for Zn the polluting role of the steelworks ''Sendzimir'' w
as evident while for Pb the contamination was mainly due to petrol eng
ine cars.
