COMMERCIAL applications such as collision-avoidance systems have creat
ed rigid requirements for the size, ruggedness, and reliability of mil
limeter-wave components. A frequency-modulated-continuous-wave (FMCW)
sensor for W-band radar applications satisfies these requirements by u
sing a front end formed with an integrated planar-waveguide configurat
ion and a signal-processing unit developed with thick-film hybrid tech
nology. The millimeter-wave hardware is fabricated using a planar-circ
uit milling technique that ensures reliable and repeatable production.
