A cathodoluminescence spectrometer with acoustooptic filters is descri
bed. This spectrometer is mounted on the column of a scanning electron
microscope. It has several advantages over conventional instruments.
The high luminosity and the electronic tuning of the monochromator mak
e it possible to record spontaneous-emission spectra and to visualize
recombination-active defects in the quantum-well layers of III-V laser
heterostructures. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
