A new three-dimensional surface analysis technique determines paramete
rs that make it possible to ! describe the tribological behaviour of s
heet surfaces during the forming process more precisely than before. T
hese parameters include the bearing ratios of the solid contact areas,
the static and dynamic lubricant pockets. A precondition for their de
termination is the three-dimensional mapping of the topography by an o
ptical measuring method. On the basis of numerous studies, a measureme
nt specification has also been developed which ensures reliable determ
ination of the parameters. A few examples demonstrate that the three-d
imensional surface analysis technique differentiates descriptively bet
ween the various sheet surfaces imf parted after skin-pass rolling wit
h laser-textured and shot-blasted skin-pass rolls.
