The results of a survey of 107 modern poultry production farms randoml
y chosen in Dakar Region revealed a high small units (less than 700 he
ads/band) proportion. These farms were almost own by people for whom p
oultry production was not the main activity. An important proportion o
f hen houses were not correctly oriented and had insufficient windows
for a good ventilation. The analysis of the production parameters reve
aled that growth rate was low and mean seven weeks old body weight was
1240 g. The mortality rate was 9% at starting and 6% at growing that
is to say an overall mortality rate of 15%. The high growth and mortal
ity rates coefficient of varation attested the important discrepency a
mong the technical results.
