The enhanced-backscattering (EBS) phenomenon is investigated for the c
ase in which a phase screen is placed close to a multiple-scattering m
edium. This situation results in a narrowing of the EBS peak that depe
nds on the strength and the position of the phase screen. The resultin
g enhancement peak is essentially the sum of two contributions: the EB
S produced by the multiple-scattering medium in the absence of the pha
se screen and the enhancement obtained when the multiple-scattering me
dium is replaced by a plane mirror. (C) 1995 Optical Society of Americ
