SYSTEMATIC AND BIOLOGICAL STUDIES IN THE BALANSIEAE AND RELATED ANAMORPHS .9. THE TELEOMORPH OF BALANSIA-KUNZEI, A NEW NAME FOR BALANSIA-EPICHLOE

The development and morphology of the teleomorph, including ascostroma and perithecia, of Balansia epichloe (Weese) Diehl on the adaxial sur face of leaves of Eragrostis capillaris (L.) Nees is described and ill ustrated. A review of the nomenclature of the fungus is made. The bino mial B. epichloe is considered to be untenable and a new name, Balansi a kunzei Morgan-Jones and Phelps, is proposed to replace it. Transitio nal stages from the primary Ephelis anamorph stroma to the teleomorph are traced. A revised taxonomic description is provided.
