X-ray films have been the basis of much of our knowledge of speech pro
duction. Unfortunately, as these films age they deteriorate and they m
ay be lost as a research resource. In this paper a database of x-ray f
ilms is described. A set of 25, high-quality x-ray films have been tra
nsferred to videodisk. The l-h videodisk contains films provided by C.
Rochette (Universite Laval) and K. Stevens and J. Perkell (M.I.T.). T
he subjects were native speakers of Canadian English or French. The im
ages were transferred to video frame-by-frame and the accompanying aud
io recordings have been synchronized with the images. The videodisk is
being distributed to the speech research community.
