We report a spin-resolved inverse photoemission study of the electroni
c structure of Fe/Au(100) thin films, concentrating on states at the c
enter of the surface Brillouin z;one and film thicknesses in the monol
ayer regime. We identify states with minority-spin character 0.7 eV ab
ove the Fermi level, confirming previous tentative assignments based u
pon spin-integrated studies. However, a feature previously assigned to
a quantum-well state is found to be exchange split by only similar or
equal to 200 meV, too small to originate from Fe-derived states, but
in line with self-consistent band-structure calculations that predict
an Au-derived interface state.
