Sorption characteristics of shungite III of the Zazhogino site with re
spect to Cs+, Co2+ and Eu3+ cations have been studied by the radioacti
ve tracer method. It was found that the kinetics of the sorption is sl
ow and the equilibrium is attained in about 7 days. At pH 5, the distr
ibution coefficients of Cs+, Co2+, and Eu3+,, 35, 47, and 660, respect
ively. The dependence of the distribution coefficients on the pH of aq
ueous solution was determined. The exchange capacity for EU(3+) at pH
6 is 36 mu eq g(-1). The modification of shungite by treating with tol
uene or hydrofluoric acid significantly improves its sorption properti
es.
