The synthesis of 3,3', 5,5'-tetrachloro-4,4'-bis(trifluoromethyl)biphe
nyl (11) and 3,3',5,5'-tetrachlo-ro-4,4'-bis(trichloromethyl) biphenyl
(13), among other trifluoromethylated biphenyls, as well as a new syn
thesis of perchlorobi-p-tolyl (14) is presented. A comparative study o
f the crystal structures of 11, 13, 14 and perchlorotoluene, and the U
V spectra of the same compounds plus alpha,alpha,alpha,2, ,4, 6-hexach
lorotoluene, has been performed. While bitolyl 14, as perchlorotoluene
, presents out of plane distortions of the CCl3 group and the aromatic
ring, and an ''abnormal'' UV spectrum, the bitolyl 13 presents only i
n plane distortions, and consequently a ''normal'' UV spectrum. This i
ndicates that alpha,alpha,alpha,2,4,6-hexachlorotoluene, also with a '
'normal'' spectrum, presents the same kind of in plane distortions.
